Not the news

I walked in on this conversation...

Lili: So it's on at night on the NBC I think. I saw it at 11.
Bob: And they were sitting on the floor?
Lili: Yes, and it is not the news? What is the point?
Bob: Scott! What show was Lili watching?
Me: Huh?
Lili: I have seen this show several time. The man, he talks to people. Sometimes they sit on the floor. But it is not the news. I see it sometimes at 11, I think on NBC?
Me: Who's the man?
Lili: He has big eyebrow.
Me: The Tonight Show? Jay Leno
Bob: Did he talk to people on the street?
Me: Did he talk to the band?
Lili: There was no band. He talk to people on the show.
Bob: Was he behind a desk?
Lili: Yes
Me: It's probably Leno.
Bob: What color is his hair? Maybe it's Conan. Did he have red hair?
Lili: No, it is black.
Me: Let me google image Leno... Is this him?
Lili: Yes! That is him! How come I see one time...the people sit on the floor?
Me: I have no idea
Lili: But his show...is not the news?
Me: No. It's not.

Dear or No Dear?

Today's virus lecture was given by one of the super FOBs! Last year Ina thought he was saying "amyloid" for half of the lecture, only to figure out it was "envelope" and be less confused as to why amyloid mattered in a virology lecture.

Funny quotes:

*after turning on projector* I guess it takes minute to warm up! Anything exciting in your lives other than the finals? You still like the grad school?

*after explaining some trimeric protein* Does that make any sense? You all understand? Dear or no dear? That's a TV show...you watch that?

Did anyone read the paper? No? Did anyone watch the game last night? Was there a game last night? You should have read paper. Just sleep? Ok.

*Explaining pseudotyping* Ok you have Virus A and Virus B. Let's say Virus A infects...I don't know...monkey. Virus B infects...can someone give me an animal? No? Hmmmm. How about business? Virus B infects business. Haha Monkey Business!

If Virus A has surface protein of Virus B, now Virus A infects business. It targets the CEOs! All CEOs are dead...now you are CEO!

All in all though, he didn't just read the slides, and I stayed awake. :)

Wait Wait Limerick

Haha I have a new favorite limerick from Wait Wait...

When you order steamed crap here they bring fish
So in Beijing they have their brass ring wish
Clean up foreign words
Till they're less absurd
They're cracking down hard on bad __________

Hell's Angels

I'm reading my online genetics textbook...

Figure 3.11. Multifactorial determination of a disease or malformation. The angels and devils can represent any combination of genetic and environmental factors. Adding an extra devil or removing an angel can tip the balance, without that particular factor being the cause of the disease. Courtesy of Professor RW Smithells.

Brunch Decisions

We went for tasty brunch at Meli Cafe, our new favorite brunch spot. It's damn good.

Mike and I couldn't pick what to order, so we chose to get two things and share...

Mike: Let's get the honey cakes, and the strawberry french toast
Me: Ok, you are the decider.
Christy: So Mike is W and you are Rumsfeld?
Me: Gee willikers
Mike: You know, you go to brunch with the friends you have.

Princesses of Funny

CNN has some sneak peek at the new Shrek. I'm excited mostly for one reason. Well, 4:

"Other newcomers include the quartet of princesses, haughty Snow White (Amy Poehler); long-haired Rapunzel (Maya Rudolph); obsessive clean freak Cinderella (Amy Sedaris); and narcoleptic Sleeping Beauty (Cheri Oteri)."

Bingo?

*hands Bingo to everyone in lab*

Lili: What is Bingo?
Me: It's a game, where you mark off when something happens
Lili: Uh huh ("this sounds dumb" tone)
Leslie: You try to get a row of 5 when 5 things happen. Usually there are just numbers and someone calls them out, and you mark out whatever number is on your card. Then when you have a row, you shout Bingo!
Me: Have you heard of this?
Lili: We don't have game like this in China.
Me: So the joke is that these things would happen a lot in seminar.
Lili: Ok.
Lili: (reading out loud) Speaker sucks up to host professor. That is always! Hahaha
Me: Yup
Lili: (reading out loud) Speaker wastes 5 minutes explaining outline! That is always!
Me: Right
Lili: This is funny.

Strawberry Cupcakes

My phone rings, well vibrates, today at lab, of course while I'm pipetting my radioactive samples into the gel. I check a few minutes later and it's Ina. I listen to the voicemail and all back excitedly!

Ina: Hey, I'm at Stanley's. They have strawberries for 49 cents a pound!
Me: Ooooh!
Ina: Do you want any?
Me: Yes please! 2 pounds!
*hangs up*
Lili: You get...berries?

And so...(after some googling)

Fresh Strawberry Cupcakes

1 3/4 c all-purpose flour
1 t baking soda
1 c sugar
1/2 c chopped walnuts
2 eggs
1/2 c vegetable oil
1/2 t vanilla extract
1 cup (10 oz) crushed fresh strawberries mixed with 3 T sugar

Mix together flour, baking soda, sugar and nuts in a bowl. In another bowl, beat together eggs, flavoring and oil until well blended. Add strawberries and beat at slow speed of mixer until berries are partially broken. Beat in flour mixture slowly until smooth, but pieces of berries are still visible. Pour batter into greased muffin tins, filling to half.

Bake at 350 deg F for 30 minutes, or until they test done. Sprinkle with powdered sugar if desired.

Makes 24

Mike will probably help make this instead: Berries, Mozarella, and Mint

Cup

Lili: Do you know why they sell the Tribune and the cup?
Me: What?
Lili: They are going to sell Tribune and cub?
Me: Huh? The Cubs?
Lili: Yes, why will they sell the Cuh...Cubs?
Me: For the most part they exist to make money, so the owners sell them to make or stop losing money, and someone else tries to make money.
Lili: Ok. The football starts today? No...baseball?
Me: Yes
Lili: It seems the cup are not very good?

Dayenu

My parents asked about Chicago hotdogs. I told my dad about the Weiner's Circle and of course he wants to go.

I found this video clip in my hunt for information about it. Wow.
