Rice Rows?

So, I was listening to the News & Notes Roundtable, like I do 5 days a week on podcast, because it's damn good and I like to hear about issues facing the African-American community with host Farai Chideya. ;)
The special one today was about the dominance of Korean-owned businesses in the African-American hair market. Groups like BOBSA are fightin' back.
A filmmaker named Aron Ranen made a documentary about it. You can watch all four parts on YouTube:

Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
Part 4

It's fascinating stuff, and reminds me of the local food vs. grocery store, or local business vs. Walmart, or local restaurant vs. chain dilemmas facing all of us. It's a little black&white (no pun intended) in the "koreans=bad, blacks=good" setup, but interesting nonetheless.
Enjoy! :)

Part 3: Jerry eats Turkey!

Because I know you wanted to hear the rest!

Part 2: Miss Valerie

Can't get enough inanity? Here's more!

I'm in a big city!

And we're back for more...

Mom calls Grandma on the phone. Let the inanity begin! This is just part1
For your reference, here's who is on the phone:

No Lunch For Me!

Figuring out what time to go eat dinner, and what to have. After my dad finished breakfast 3 hours ago. Before we go eat Chinese food in Chinatown.

Merp

Dad discovers Caribou Coffee. And potatoes...with skins!

Black Coffee

First my dad sets up the van to take him to the airport, giving them my cell #.
Then he talks about his meal at Eleven City Diner.
Then he shares details on his walk to Roosevelt Road.

Pain in the Ass

Time for more parent videos! These are all still from Thanksgiving. Don't worry, there are more hours to go through. :)
Here's the first. My dad asks about our Ikea toilet paper dispenser (magnetic and hard to get apart). And our toilet paper. And then discusses the plan of getting some at Costco. Good times.

The Amish Wear ChristmasShoes

I watched The Devil Wears Prada for the first time Sunday night. It was pretty much what I expected, aka gay as all hell. Come on, 2 Madonna songs in the movie! Meryl was fabulous, of course.

In a shoe-related story, I was linked via Popwatch to the Worst Christmas Songs Ever.

The #2 is my favorite...
"Basically we have a kid who's mom is dying so his dad sends him to the shoe store to BEG FOR FREE SHOES so his mom can look pretty when she meets Jesus!"
You gotta watch. Why is she Amish? Who treats a dying woman with Flonase?!? Why is the title on the bottom the whole time in that awful font?!?

Bye Bye 109. Hello Peppermint Gomez

Jon Stewart says goodbye to the 109th Congress. It's awesome.

Samantha Bee says hello to Al Jazeera. Also awesome.

Posting removed. *eyeroll* The internets certainly get around quickly.

Pump The Sodium

So, I ran into a fellow student who told me about a "remix" of one FOB professor's lecture on sodium pumps and diuretics. While he was somewhat made more famous in the skit - someone apparently recorded the lecture for a coop, and turned it into a song. It's hilarious!
Pump The Sodium (right click and save as, then add to itunes)

And sodium channels are in the news!

MoDo

I randomly came across the link to an old (6 weeks ago) interview of Stewart and Colbert by Maureen Dowd for Rolling Stone. It's pretty good.
Read it here.

Check it

(this one was actually appropriately brought up in context)

Lili: You have learned how to talk to the patients?
Me: Yes
Lili: And you have learned how to examine the patients?
Me: Yes
Lili: Wow, you have done it all.
Me: Yes
Lili: You can do everything? Even check the reflection on the knee? *motions a knee-tapping reflex*
Me: Um, yes.

30 Rock & Studio 60 Don't Suck

There's an article in NYT about how these shows, in fact, do not suck.
Well, at least it claims that most of the people, most of the time, do not suck.
